The Fellowship of the Ring

Gandalf -Ainur/Maiar, Istari, Wizard in Middle-Earth.

Go to fullsize image

In 3018, when the Fellowship of the Ring was formed, Gandalf was eventually slain battling a balrog in Moria. Because his quest was not finished and the 'plan of the Valar had failed', Illuvatar himself empowered Gandalf and returned him to life ... and back to Middle Earth. He returned as Gandalf the White.

Frodo Baggins Hobbit of the Shire and Ringbearer

In 3018, Gandalf reappeared in the Shire, and related to Frodo all he had learned about the Ring's history. On Gandalf's advice, Frodo departed the Shire with the Ring, accompanied by Sam and Pippin. They were soon joined by Merry. In the village of Bree, they met the myterious Ranger, Strider, who became their companion. ON the way to Rivendell, Frodo was wounded by a Morgul blade at Weathertop. In Rivendell, he was healed by Elrond, and the Fellowship of the Ring was formed.

At Amon Hen, Frodo was confronted by Boromir, who tried to take the Ring from him. Frodo managed to get away. The Fellowship was broken. Frodo, making up his mind to go on alone, was soon joined by Sam, and the two of them set out for Mordor. They eventually met up with Gollum, who led them to Cirith Ungol, and to the lair of Shelob the Great Spider. Frodo was sorely wounded by Shelob, and taken captive by the orcs of MOrdor.

Aragorn II- Chieftain of the Dúnedain, King of the Reunited Kingdom

son of Gilraen and Arathorn. He is chief of the northern Dunedain and is Isildur's heir. Isildur's descendants were called Rangers and they while living in the wild helped protect the inhabitants of Middle Earth. Aragorn's given name by his mother is Estel, which means 'hope'. He is known by many other names as well - among them 'Strider', 'Elessar', and 'Thorongil'.

 In Rivendell, Aragorn becomes part of the Company of the Ring. Before departing, the sword Narsil is reforged and renamed 'Anduril', wihch means Flame of the West.

After Gandalf falls in Moria, Aragorn becomes the leader of the Fellowship. When the Fellowship breaks at Parth Galen, Aragorn is seperated from the others along with Legolas and Gimli. He decides to pursue the abducted hobbits, Merry and Pippin, whom orcs are taking to Saruman at Isengard.

Legolas Greenleaf - Sindarin Elf of the Wood Elves in Northern Mirkwood.

While Legolas refers to himself as a silvan elf in LOTR, he is indeed one of the Sindar in orgin.Legolas journeyed to Rivendell in 3018 of the Third Age for the Council of Elrond. He was sent by his father, Thranduil, to carry the ill tidings that Gollum – whom the Mirkwood elves had held prisoner – had escaped.Chosen by Elrond as one of the Nine Walkers of the Fellowship of the Ring, Legolas set out from Rivendell with the Company of the Ring. During the journey, he became close friends with Gimli the dwarf, a friendship that would last all his days.

After Boromir's death, and the breaking of the Fellowship, he journeyed with Aragorn and Gimli through the southern lands of Middle Earth in search of the captured hobbits, Merry and Pippin. They then went onward to fight at the Battle of the Hornburg (Helms Deep), then travelled the Paths of the Dead , where Aragorn freed the Oathbreakers. From there the group, accompanied by the Dead of Dunharrow, traveled south to Pelargir and fought a battle that won them control of the Corsair ship fleet. They then sailed to Minas Tirith, where Legolas fought with his companions in the Battle of the Pelennor fields. He then went as representative of the Elves with the Captains of the West to the Battle of the Morannon

Gimli - Dwarf of Erebor.

In 3018, Gimli went with his father to Rivendell, and there was chosen to be part of the Fellowship of the Ring. He eventually became very close friends with Legolas, an elf of Mirkwood, and this friendship would last all his days. In Lothlorien, Gimli became enamoured of Galadriel, Lady of Lorien, and requested of her (as his chosen gift) a lock of her hair. She gave him three.

When Boromir was killed and the Fellowship divided at Amon Hen, he journeyed with Aragorn and Legolas through in search of the captured hobbits, Merry and Pippin. Their path led them to Rohan, and eventually to the great battle of Helm's Deep. Gimli accompanied Aragorn, Legolas, the sons of Elrond, and others of the northern Dunedain on the Paths of the Dead , where Aragorn freed the Oathbreakers. From there, the Dead of Dunharrow went with the group Pelargir and fought a battle that won them control of the Corsair fleet. They sailed to Minas Tirith, and there Gimli fought with his companions in the Battle of the Pelennor fields. He also marched with the Captains of the West to the Morannon.

Samwise Gamgee - Hobbit of the Shire.

Samwise remained with Frodo through the entire quest. He battled and prevailed over Shelob,using both the Phial of Galadriel and Sting (Frodo's sword). Sam then rescued Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol and the two of them reached the fires of Mount Doom. There, the ring was finally destroyed.

When Frodo made the choice to sail to the Undying Lands, badly in need of both physical and mental healing, he gave Bag End to Sam. Sam was elected Mayor no less than seven times.He married Rosie Cotton and was the father of thirteen children: Elanor, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin and Tolman.

Boromir- Dúnedain lord of Gondor..

A strange dream, one he shared with his brother, led Boromir to the Council of Elrond in Rivendell in 3018. He hoped to learn the dream's meaning, which seemed to foretell the finding of Isildur's Bane: the One Ring of the Dark lord, Sauron. Although Boromir wishes to take the ring to Gondor and use it to defend his homeland, the Council decides that the ring must be destroyed. Boromir is appointed to be one of the 9 companions who will attempt to take the ring into Mordor and destroy it.

In Lothlorien, Boromir is tested by Galadriel, but does not share with his companions all that passed between them. Once the Fellowship reaches Amon Hen, Boromir finally succumbs to the evil lure of the Ring and tries to wrest it from Frodo. Frodo manages to flee, and Boromir's madness quickly passes ... and he is filled with understanding and remorse.

Boromir comes upon the hobbits Merry and Pippin, who are being attacked by Orcs. In his brave defense of his friends, Boromir sounds the great horn of Gondor to call for aid, but he is quickly wounded mortally with many orc arrows. The orcs capture the two hobbits and flee.

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli (who have managed to stay together) give their fallen comrade a formal ship-burial by sending Boromir's body over the Raurus Falls in the Elvish given them by Celeborn.

Meriadoc Brandybuck - Hobbit of the Shire.

"Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) was born in 1382 of the Third Age. He is the son of Saradoc Brandybuck and Esmeralda Took. Merry was a good friend of Frodo's, and was chosen to join the Fellowship of the Ring.

With Pippin Took, Merry became seperated from the Company at Parth Galen, and both were captured by orcs. On escaping, Merry and Pippin met Treebeard and the Ents in Fangorn Forest. There, they managed to rouse the Ents into action against Saruman in Isengard.

In Rohan, Merry became the squire of King Théoden. With the help of Eowyn, who took him secretly into battle on the Pelenno, he fought with the Rohirrim. Merry's struck the Witch King, paralyzing him, and this distracted the Nazgul lord enough so that Eowyn was able to strike and reduce him to impotence. Merry was terribly wounded, and later healed by Aragorn in the Houses of Healing.

Peregrin Took - Hobbit of the Shire.

"Peregrin (Pippin) Took was born in 2990 Third Age. He is the son of Paladin Took II and Eglantine Banks. Pippin is Frodo's cousin, and the youngest member of the Fellowship of the ring.

With his friend Merry, Pippin was separated from the Company at Parth Galen, and both hobbits were captured by orcs. They escaped into Fangorn Forest, and there came across Treebeard and the Ents. Pippin and Merry roused the Ents to action against Saruman in Isengard

Pippin had his moments of 'curiousity getting the best of him', but was certainly a valuable member of the Fellowship. After the Ents stormed Isengard, Pippin was taken to MInas Tirith by Gandalf, and there swore himself to the service of Denethor II, ruling steward of Gondor. During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Pippin discovered (to his horror) that Denethor mistakenly thought his son Faramir was dead, and was going to burn him alive. (along with his own person.) Thanks to Pippin seeking out Gandalf, Faramir was saved.

Song of Eärendil

"Eärendil was a mariner
that tarried in Arvernien;
he built a boat of timber felled
in Nimbrethil to journey in;
her sails he wove of silver fair,
of silver were her lanterns made,
her prow was fashioned like a swan,
and light upon her banners laid.

In panoply of ancient kings,
in chained rings he armoured him;
his shining shield was scored with runes
to ward all wounds and harm from him;
his bow was made of dragon-horn,
his arrows shorn of ebony,
of silver was his habergeon,
his scabbard of chalcedony;
his sword of steel was valiant,
of adamant his helmet tall,
an eagle-plume upon his crest,
upon his breast an emerald.
Beneath the Moon and under star
he wandered far from northern strands,
bewildered on enchanted ways
beyond the days of mortal lands.
From gnashing of the Narrow Ice
where shadow lies on frozen hills,
from nether heats and burning waste
he turned in haste, and roving still
on starless waters far astray
at last he came to Night of Naught,
and passed, and never sight he saw
of shining shore nor light he sought.
The winds of wrath came driving him,
and blindly in the foam he fled
from west to east and errandless,
unheralded he homeward sped.
There flying Elwing came to him,
and flame was in the darkness lit;
more bright than light of diamond
the fire upon her carcanet.
The Silmaril she bound on him
and crowned him with the living light
and dauntless then with burning brow
he turned his prow; and in the night
from Otherworld beyond the Sea
there strong and free a storm arose,
a wind of power in Tarmenel;
by paths that seldom mortal goes
his boat it bore with biting breath
as might of death across the grey
and long-forsaken seas distressed:
from east to west he passed away.
Through Evernight he back was borne
on black and roaring waves that ran
o'er leagues unlit and foundered shores
that drowned before the Days began,
until he heard on strands of pearl
where ends the world the music long,
where ever-foaming billows roll
the yellow gold and jewels wan.
He saw the Mountain silent rise
where twilight lies upon the knees
of Valinor, and Eldamar
beheld afar beyond the seas.
A wanderer escaped from night
to haven white he came at last,
to Elvenhome the green and fair
where keen the air, where pale as glass
beneath the Hill of Ilmarin
a-glimmer in valley sheer
the lamplit towers of Tirion
are mirrored on the Shadowmere.

He tarried there from errantry,
and melodies they taught to him,
and sages old him marvels told,
and harps of gold they brought to him.

They clothed him then in elven-white,
and seven lights before him sent
,as through the Calacirian
to hidden land forlorn he went.
He came unto the timeless halls
where shining fall the countless years,
and endless reigns the Elder King
In Ilmarin on Mountain sheer;
and words unheard were spoken then
of folk of Men and Elven-kin.
Beyond the world were visions showed
forbid to those that dwell therein.
A ship then new they built for him
of mithril and of elven-glass
with shining prow; no shaven oar
nor sail she bore on silver mast:
the Silmaril as lantern light
and banner bright with living flame
to gleam thereon by Elbereth
herself was set, who thither came
and wings immortal made for him,
and laid on him undying doom,
to sail the shoreless skies and come
behind the Sun and light of Moon.

From Evereven's lofty hills
where softly silver fountains fall
his wings him bore, a wandering light,
beyond the mighty Mountain Wall.

From World's End then he turned away,
and yearned again to find afar
his home through shadows journeying,
and burning as an island star
on high above the mists he came,
a distant flame before the Sun,
a wonder ere the waking dawn
where grey the Norland waters run.
And over Middle-earth he passed
and heard at last the weeping sore
of women and of elven-maids
in Elder Days, in years of yore.
But on him mighty doom was laid,
till Moon should fade, an orbéd star
to pass, and tarry never more
on Hither Shores where mortals are;
for ever still a herald on
an errand that should never rest
to bear his shining lamp afar,
the Flammifer of Westernesse."

Galadriel - Noldorin Elf, Lady of the Galadrim, Lady of Lorien.Her name means ‘Radiant Garland’.

Go to fullsize imageGaladriel was the daughter of Finarfin of the Noldor and Earwen of the Teleri. She was born in Valinor in 1362 during the Years of the Trees. Her brothers were Finrod (called ‘The Faithful&rsquoWink, Orodreth (father of Gil-Galad), Angrod, and Aegnor. When Morgoth stole the Silmarils, Feanor and many of the Noldor rebelled against the Valar and left the Blessed Lands to follow Morgoth into Middle Eart ... Galadriel departed with them, as did her brothers. This was at the beginning of the First Age. She did not do this for love of Feanor, nor to help regain the stolen Silmarils, but because she had a desire to see Middle Earth again and rule her own lands. It is believed that she took no part in the Kinslaying at Alqualonde.

Galadriel was kin to King Thingol of Doriath (through her mother) and often spent time there. In Doriath she met Celeborn of the Sindar, who was a kinsman of Thingol’s. When the Valar entered Middle Earth and finally defeated Morgoth during the War of Wrath, most of the Noldor were pardoned and returned to the West. Most all of Beleriand had been destroyed in the Great Battle. Galadriel, Celeborn, Cirdan of the Havens, Elrond (son of Earendil), and Gil-Galad were among those Eldar who did not depart with the majority. In the Third Age, after Amroth, lord of Lorien, was lost in his search for Nimrodel (1981 TA), Galadriel and Celeborn became the Lady and Lord of Lothlorien. They had a daughter, Celebrian, who was later wed to Elrond of Rivendell. From them came Galadriel’s three grandchildren; Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen.

Celebrimbor had given to Galadriel one of the Three Elven rings he had forged; Nenya, the Ring of Water. With it, she protected Lothlorien from the effects of time, as well as from enemies.

During the War of the Ring, Galadriel and Celeborn gave refuge to the Fellowship of the Ring. When Frodo freely offered Galadriel the One Ring, she refused it … thus passing a great test. Her rejection of the One Ring regained her eventual passage back to Valinor. To all the Fellowship she gave gifts … to Frodo Baggins she gave a phial filled with the light of Earendil.

Galadriel and Celeborn, with an army of Lothlorien elves, stormed Sauron’s old fortress of Dol Guldur during the War of the Ring, where the Ringwraith Khamul (and many enemies) dwelt. Galadriel brought down the walls of the great fortress. When the Ringbearer fulfilled his quest and Sauron was defeated at the end of the Third Age, Galadriel and Celeborn traveled to Minas Tirith for the wedding of King Aragorn to their granddaughter, Arwen.

On September 29, 3021 Third Age, Galadriel departed into the West with many of the Elves. Celeborn, however, was not yet ready to depart Middle Earth and remained behind. Also departing West with her were Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo Baggins, and Elrond of Rivendell. (and some believe Cirdan also went at that time).

Elrond Peredhil (Half-Elven, lord of Rivendell, keeper of the Elven Ring Vilya)

Go to fullsize imageElrond was born at the Sirion Havens in the late First Age. During the sack of the Havens, Elrond and his brother were captured by the sons of Feanor - but Maglor released them.

After the War of Wrath, because of his father's great deed in asking (and winning) the aid of the Valar against Morgoth, Earendil and his children (and ,i>their children) were given the choice to be counted either among Elves or Men. Elrond chose the Firstborn, and stayed in Lindon with Gil-galad. HIs brother Elros chose to be counted among Men. (Aragorn was a descendant of Elrond's brother.)

Elrond remained in Lindon until the invasion of Eriador by Sauron, (1697 Second Age) at which time he and the surviving Noldor fled. Elrond then founded Imladris (Rivendell) as a refuge. He now had the greatest of the Elven Rings, Vilya - given to him by Gil-galad.

Elrond fought alongside Gil-galad (as his herald) and Elendil during the Last Alliance. He tried to persuade Isildur to throw the One Ring into the Fire at that time.Elrond was a member of the White Council.

He was wed to Celebrian (100 Third Age), the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. Their children are Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen. Celebrian departed ME for the West after she was attacked by orcs in the Misty Mountains (and rescued by her sons).

He secretly raised Aragorn in Rivendell until Aragorn reached the age of twenty, at which time Elrond told him of his lineage. Even though Aragorn and Arwen had fallen in love, Elrond would not consent to the marriage of his daughter to any Man who was less than the King of both Gondor and Arnor.

In 3018 (Third Age) Elrond held the great Council in Rivendell, where he chose the members of the Fellowship who would aid Frodo in the quest to destroy the One Ring.After the War of the Ring, Elrond had been in Middle earth some 6,500 years. He finally departed Middle Earth with Frodo and many of the Noldor at the end of the Third Age.

Arwen - Half-elven, Daughter of Elrond of Rivendell.

She was born in 241 of the Third Age, and the elves called her 'Evenstar'. Her long life was mostly spent in Rivendell, though she did at times reside in Lothlorien.

In 2951, she met and fell deeply in love with Aragorn, the heir of Isildur. As one of the Peredhil (half-elven with a special choice) she had been given a choice between elvish immortality and mortality. For love of Aragorn, Arwen chose to be counted among mortals, and would therefore leave the circles of the World upon death. Her father forbade a marriage between Aragorn and his daugher until/unless Aragorn finally became King of the Reunited Kingdom.

When Sauron was finally defeated once and for all, Aragorn and Arwen wed in the city of Minas Tirith.

She bore Aragorn one son and several daughters, and they lived in bliss until Aragorn's death in 120 of the Fourth Age.

In deep mourning, Arwen soon travelled back to Lothlórien and wandered there for a time. About a year later chose to lay herself down to die on Cerin Amroth, the place where she and Aragorn had pledged their love."
